Orthodontic treatment, whether through traditional metal braces or invisalign, is an often requested treatment for patients to help straighten the teeth. At Sager Dental, we can help evaluate whether or not braces may be right for you or your child as ewll as diagnose any treatment that needs to be done prior to braces. A common misconception for most parents is that we have to wait until all the permanent teeth are in the mouth before starting orthodontic treatment. Actually, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children be seen no later than the age of 7 for an orthodontic evaluation. This allows the orthodontist to use normal tooth loss and bone growth help achieve straight teeth. This also helps prevent the need to have permanent teeth removed to make more space in the mouth.
Dr. Sager's personal opinion when considering braces is whether or not your child is practicing adequate oral hygiene. If your child is not brushing 2x daily, braces may not be recommended until hygiene improves. With all the wires, brackets, and other materials associated with braces, the risk of cavities is higher than without braces.
